    The purpose of the Mary E. Bivins Religious Scholarship Program is to educate ministers to preach the Christian religion. Scholarships are provided for undergraduate (juniors or seniors only) and graduate education leading to a bachelors or masters degree in a field that prepares the student to preach the Christian religion. Priority will be given to students intending to serve as pulpit pastors upon graduation.

    Scholarship awards are $2,500 per semester for undergraduate students classified as a junior or senior and $3,500 per semester for graduate students. Scholarship awards are to be used for tuition, books, fees, and other expenses as necessary for college/university attendance. The senior residents of Bristol Glen Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), United Methodist Homes of New Jersey are offering two $1,000.00 (one thousand dollar) annual scholarships to recognize the outstanding academic performance and leadership skills of Masters level theological students.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for any of the scholarships listed below the applicant must:

    be a member of a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada;

    be preparing for ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada;

    know that GPA may be a determining factor in consideration of scholarships awarded;

    provide evidence of financial need;

    be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 9 credit hours per semester) in an ATS accredited seminary or school; be enrolled in an M.Div., or equivalent degree program; provide official transcript(s) of academic work. If you have completed less than one year of graduate seminary, please submit transcripts for all under-graduate attendance and degree fulfillment. If you have completed at least one year of graduate seminary, you only need to submit the transcripts for your cumulative seminary experience. Second career seminary students should consult with DHM scholarship office regarding how to proceed;

    provide three references; one from each of the following persons: a regional minister from one of the 33 regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada from the region with which you are under care, the pastor of your home CC (DOC) congregation or from the CC (DOC) congregation wherein you are a member, and a professor (seminary or undergraduate). First year students entering may substitute the regional minister with a reference from a recognized executive minister of racial ethnic ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. No referent can be a relative. Call if you have questions; be under care of a regional Commission on the Ministry, or in the process of coming under care (if regional reference is coming from ethnic constituency executive, you will be required to contact your regional minister and request that they verify your under care status. It will be your responsibility to ensure a regional minister fulfills this request.);

    (Exceptions to some of the above qualifications may be made within the Michael Scholarship, Star-Supporter and African American Scholarship fund programs. Contact our office for details.)

    Seminarian scholarships

    To be considered for a seminarian scholarship, students must meet these requirements:

    • Hold active membership in an American Baptist church for at least one year before applying for aid.
    • Enrollment at an accredited institution in the United States or Puerto Rico.
    • U.S. citizenship or classification as a permanent resident.

    Individual seminarian grants

    Students attending seminary or theological school may apply for a grant of up to $750. Seminarians must be enrolled at least two-thirds time in one of the following first professional degree programs: M.Div., M.C.E., M.A.C.E. or M.R.E. (D.Min. students are ineligible.)

    Seminarian Support Program (SSP)

    This program is designed for American Baptist seminarians attending an ABCUSA-related seminary or theological school. Pledges of support from local churches or ABCUSA organizations will be matched up to $1,000 per academic year for designated students. Recipients must be enrolled at least two-thirds time in one of the following degree programs: M.Div., M.C.E., M.A.C.E. or M.R.E. (D.Min. students are ineligible.) Recipients must be resident students of the ABCUSA-related seminary that will award the degree. Applications for this program are available from the seminary. All pledges should be sent directly to the seminary by Aug. 1.

    Daniel E. Weiss Fund for Excellence

    This scholarship may pay up to $3,000 for the first year of seminary. It is designed to identify gifted college junior or senior students who do not plan to undertake theological studies but possess gifts and skills for ministry. Pastors, campus ministers and college faculty may nominate an American Baptist student who displays commitment to the Gospel and church life, is growing as a disciple of Christ, shows maturity and integrity of character and demonstrates outstanding academic ability. Nominations will be accepted until Nov. 1 for the following academic year. The number of scholarships awarded depends on the number of nominees and the amount of available funds.

    Asian American Grant

    Seminarians can gain ministerial experience by working in a church during the summer. Grants of $500 are provided by the financial aid program and matched by the employing church. Interested seminarians should contact their pastor. Church pastors may call the Office of Financial Aid for Studies for additional information at 800.ABC.3USA, x2067.

    Adora S. Jones Ministerial Trust Scholarships-The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to Baptist, Congregational, United Methodist, or Presbyterian college and seminary students from Iowa.

    With each new generation of leaders in ministry and academia, FTE strives to offer relevant resources that respond to the changing church and academy. Throughout the history of FTE, more than 7,000 fellowships have supported young adults, rising church leaders and scholars on their path to vocation.     The Rooks Fellowship was established to support the seminary education of members of the United Church of Christ from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in our church who are committed to serving the UCC and who are enrolled in a school of theology accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. The Rooks Fellowship is available to members of the UCC who are African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American, Native-American Indian or Pacific Islander. Grants are also made to support doctoral study at accredited graduate schools for those seeking to pursue a scholarly teaching vocation in the field of religion. Grants are made to both full-time and part-time students and may be renewed.

    Master of Divinity students are expected to be a Member in Discernment. Doctoral students must be enrolled in an ATS accredited seminary or theological school leading to a PH.D., Th.D., D.Min. or Ed.D., in a field related to religions studies. Preference will be given to Doctoral students who have demonstrated promise of academic excellence, teaching effectiveness, and commitment to the United Church of Christ and who intend to become professors in colleges, seminaries, or graduate schools. Rooks Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, educational fees charged by the educational institution, books, room and board and basic living expenses (housing, food). Payment will be made to the seminary or theological school. Rooks Scholars may request funds from the institution for basic living expenses.
